My first
interest in ham radio was in making contact so followed up the idea
of obtaining an amateur license , sat the required exams and managed to
struggle through the amateur 12 wpm ZL4AP . Morse CW . This was in 1973 , the
first radio was the Yaesu FTDX 401 zl4ap . decent antennas , and I enjoyed
building ham towers, my first tower was a telescoping one to 70ft extended with
a homemade hydraulic ram , an old lorry hoist pump was driven with an
electric motor to lift it. I soon started to tower experiment with tilt over ,
self supporting , rotatable, and lattice towers , and ended up building and
selling between forty five and fifty towers to all parts of New Zealand .
The main interest over the years has been making long distance DX contacts on
80 mx . mostly working DX ham radio stations in England G . ZL zl zl4 the phased 1/4w verticals for
80 m. I am now using a single 1/4w antenna at 63ft. high for 80m.and
a KLM. KT34XA on another home made tower , this is on our qth at Invercargill. Present equipment includes the
Kenwood TS830s driving the Heathkit SB220 amp and Yaesu FT1000MP driving
the Henry remote amplifier. Computer is a
Pentium with Windows 98. CD-ROM has a disk with about 1.2million callsigns
to refer to zl4 zl ZL . I have started a wrought iron business ,
making all manner of things Smithfield Metal Craft
